Getjenge Community Radio (GCR) is a community media initiative operating in South-Western Zimbabwe and serving Bulilima and Mangwe rural communities whose town is Plumtree.
The initiative is one of the many Community Radio (CR) initiatives awaiting licensing by the Zimbabwean government. As such the initiative runs only off-air programming and uses New Media platforms to share information with communities.
In collaboration with its sister organisation Plumtree Development Trust, the initiative has been working on citizen media projects aimed at providing Plumtree communities with fair, independent, locally relevant and development oriented information.
The founders of the initiative have a firm belief that, in order for sustainable development to be occur in communities, citizens need communication platforms to access actionable information, share ideas, mobilize each other and hold their leaders (duty bearers) accountable for the fulfillment of rights.
However, the targeted communities have lived outside the information grid since independence and this has had a negative impact on community development in the areas.
Getjenge CR in collaboration with PDT is thus working to address this gap through its citizen media projects that enable communities to leverage on New and Old Media platforms to access and share information.
This site is part of the initiative’s efforts to strengthen local voices through community storytelling.
Although, online information platforms are still accessed by a sizable number of people in the targeted communities at least an average person has a mobile phone hence this the CR uses mobile telephony to share information with communities through Bulk SmS and MobiNews platforms.
Content on this site shall also be published monthly as a newsletter to cater for community members without access to Internet Service. In addition to this, compact discs and memory sticks shall be used to disseminate pre-recorded content on community development issues.
This site is envisaged to change narratives, largely negative, that have in the past been peddled by the mainstream media about the communities of Plumtree. Furthermore, this blog shall strive to provide balanced, fair, independent and development oriented news in the following areas: Agriculture, Education, Arts and Culture, Health and general community news.
Members of the public are thus requested to visit the section written ‘Report Issue’ on this website and share their stories or send email or send direct SmS to contacts provided here. Those who wish to report issues anonymously will not be requested to disclose their names under any circumstances.
Community members can also subscribe to our bulk SmS platforms for news highlights through sending a text message of interest via mobile numbers provided here.
